Storage Solutions for Physical Collections

Present day library buildings tend to be multi-purpose spaces that serve diverse populations. The variety of patron needs is competing with space that houses endlessly growing library collections. If librarians wish to continue expanding their collections, while incorporating new patron services, then they need to consider alternative solutions for storing library materials.

While taking an introductory course, Information Professions, I researched, wrote and presented on the topic of storing physical collections. Libraries that are challenged with space issues have several options, three of which I focus on in this paper: movable compact storage, off-site storage, and Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems.
